My kids love to play with baking soda and vinegar. Simple science at its best. I have been telling the kids for some time we would try freezing it for playtime. Well, we can finally mark it off our to try list. Apple Scented Frozen Baking Soda and Vinegar Science is perfect for fall. Fall is right around the corner and thoughts and scents of apples are on my mind. Fall in the south is one of my favorite seasons. Perfect weather for lots of outside playtime.
What I used:
small bowls
baking soda
vinegar
food coloring
Even with the frozen vinegar in the bin the apple scent took over and the smell of fall was in the air.
I took one of our clear plastic bins and placed the frozen baking soda and vinegar inside to try and contain the mess. Yes, the is messy but cleans up is not bad. We also played outside this time.
I put a white plastic table cloth down under the bin too.
To get started fill a few bowls with vinegar and food coloring. I chose red and green. Place them in the freezer. I left them over night.
Next mix baking soda, water, and the apple scent in a mixing bowl. You should add a little water at a time. I do not want it really runny. Mine was still thick but able to pour. Hope that makes since. I used 4 boxes of 1lb baking soda. You could use less or more. I added the liquid apple scent to this before I poured into the bowls. Place the bowls in freezer over night or until frozen.
This bin is perfect for showing how baking soda and vinegar react together. Go over colors and see what happens when they mix together(color recognition and color mixing). Great for sense of touch, sight, and smell.
The kids turned them into building block and stacked them one on top of another. You can go over counting… So many ways to incorporate hands on learning during playtime.
The kids were enjoying the fizzing and building when playtime was cut short because one of the kids was ill. As fellow parents, grandparents, or teacher you know kids go from playing to laying in the floor in minutes. That is what happened to little brother. Poor guy is feel better now that the bug has passed. The kids were having so much fun playing with the Apple Scented Frozen Baking Soda and Vinegar that we will have to try again soon.
We hope you can have fun with this idea too.
