Homemade Tortillas in honor of cinco de mayo. This turned into playing with dough fun!
I got the recipe from http://jazibesrecipes.blogspot.com/2007/07/tortillas-de-harina-flour-tortillas.html. This is our first time making tortillas!
What you need:
5 cups of flour plus 1 cup on rolling surface, 1 1/2 c said veg. oil ( we use canola oil), 1TBS baking powder, 2 TBS salt, and 1 1/2 c warm water.
OUR TORTILLAS CAME OUT REALLY SALTY. I WOULD USE MAYBE 2 TSP NOT TBSP OF SALT. I DO NOT LIKE TO BE DEFEATED IN THE KITCHEN, SO I WILL BE SEARCHING FOR OTHER RECIPES AND TRYING AGAIN. WHEN WE FIND ONE WE LOVE I WILL SHARE IT WITH YOU!!
What to do:
Mix dry ingredients, make a hole in the middle and add oil and water. Start mixing. When the dough is firm start kneading it. Pull off pieces of the dough ( about golf ball size) and roll into balls and place on a floured surface like a cookie sheet( I put foil down 1st then the flour). Let them sit for 30 min under a damp towel. When the time is up take the balls and roll them out with your rolling pin, one at a time. Cook them in a griddle or skillet at medium heat. You do not oil pan. We used a griddle.
AFTER WE TASTED THEM I REALIZED THEY WERE TOO SALTY. I HAD ONLY MADE HALF THE DOUGH. SO WHAT TO DO WITH THE OTHER HALF? I GAVE THE PAN TO big brother AND WE ADDED SOME STRAWS AND THEN JELLY BEANS! HE THEN WENT TO MASHING THE DOUGH AND STICKING THE STRAWS ALL OVER. MOST OF THE JELLY BEANS ENDED UP IN HIS TUMMY:-) HE HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH THIS. NOT EVERYTHING WE DO AT OUR HOUSE TURNS OUT HOW WE HOPE BUT IF WE HAVE FUN TRYING AND TAKE THE DISAPPOINTING THINGS AND MAKE GOOD OUT OF THEM(OR JUST LEARN FROM THE FAILURES) I GUESS THEN IT TURNS OUT TO BE A SUCCESS.
He’s looking at the jelly bean and getting ready to ask me if he can eat it even though it touched the dough, lol.
Now he is eating one…
