Pete The Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons- Counting Activity

Excited to be teaming up with some amazing moms for the next few weeks to bring you the Preschool Book Club.  To start us off is Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.  I went with a counting activity for this book. I had just made a few number cards for the kids and they seemed perfect for this book.  My oldest really enjoyed our learning activity and both my boys enjoyed the book.

How to Make the Number Cards:

Cut foam sheets in half.  Then take the sharpies and write the number, spell the number, and make dots to go with the numbers. Now you have number cards you can use over and over again with the kids.

What to do for the counting activity:

First read the book and get the kids excited about the 4 groovy buttons.  Then sit out the number cards. We started with 1-4 to go with the book.  After doing those we added more numbers to review.  And give the kids the button container.

Now explain to the kids for each number card, they can add that amount of buttons to it (ie. 1=one button, 2= two buttons, etc.)

This is such a great way to get kids excited about counting.  Great for number recognition.  We also went over the colors of the buttons.  This also helps kids associate the amount of buttons to the number written down.  And, of course, it is just fun to play with buttons.

Exploring Books Through Play 50 activities based on books about friendship, acceptance, and empathy is a great collection of idea to use along with each book.  These books share such great lessons for all of us to learn.  The fun stories make it easy to get a conversation started with kids or for the younger ones to introduce the ideas to them.  I had so much fun working on this project  with Homegrown Friends, Mama Papa Bubba, Buggy and Buddy, and Sugar Aunts.  I hope you and your kids can have just as much fun with these book inspired activities too.
