Little Blue and Little Yellow- color mixing activity for kids

This week’s Preschool Book Club brings you Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni.  We had never heard of this book before the book club.  So glad we now have a new book to enjoy in our growing home library.
I knew we would have to do some sort of coloring mixing activity to go with this book but was not sure what we would do.  Then one warm afternoon inspiration hit.  Water play would be the perfect afternoon activity so incorporating color mixing with it would be a great book extension activity.

How to make the color mixing activity:

Fill all bottles up with water.  Make some bottles yellow and some blue with the food coloring.

What we planned to do for this book was a simple color mixing activity with water.  We love water play at my house .  It is great for my multi aged kids and offers many learning possibilities.

I got out our under the bed storage bin (our diy water bin or table) and set it on the kid’s picnic table.  I then brought out the colored water bottles I had made in blue and yellow.  For extra fun I also mixed up soapy water and put it in a drink container. I got out some plastic bowls and watering cans and sat those extras to the side.
I told them we would experiment to see what happened when we mixed blue and yellow water before we started really playing.

All 3 kids ages 1- 5yr started investigating the set up.  Soon the oldest 2 started adding in the blue and yellow water to the bin.  Oh I forgot.!  I added a little plain water to the bin to start because I did not have enough bottles collected to fill it up. This worked just fine.

Pouring and scooping water is great for gross motor skills.  This activity was the perfect color mixing activity for my young kids.  And a great way to go over color recognition too.

Baby brother was so excited to be outside with the big boys getting in on the water fun!

Baby brother helped me give it a good mix.  Wow, blue and yellow water makes GREEN.  They had fun pouring and mixing the water but they really had fun once they moved on to the soapy water.  My kids love soapy water, lol.

Baby brother and I moved back when the soap came out.  I was worried he would eat it.  He sat and watched for a few minutes and then we went in and watched them from the window.

My view from inside.  Perfect way for me to watch them and keep baby brother inside out of the soap.

They soon opened the large storage box full of outside toys and started playing on their own time. Getting out whatever seemed to fit best for their ideas.  Child led play at its best.  All and all we enjoyed a new book ,a fun color mixing activity, sibling playtime, and free play in the end for the big boys.  A great day in the end.

We hope you and the kids can enjoy some book inspired fun too.
