Irish soda bread

What do you love about the holiday’s with the kids?  One of the things I love about holiday’s is baking with my boys.  For each holiday we either make an old favorite or venture out and try something new.  For St.  Patrick’s Day coming up we ventured out to try something new.  Our something new was Irish Soda Bread.  I love searching google for new recipes. And searching Irish foods I came across this Irish Soda Bread.  It looked and sounded yummy.  I could’t wait to try it.
Big brother is a pro at baking with me now.  We are just really getting little brother more involved in the baking process with us now.  I love having both my kids in there with me to bake.  I look forward to having all 3 of them in there one day.  We had a lot of fun pouring and mixing our ingredients together.  I even wore a fire helmet through the whole process.  It was big brothers request that I wear this helmet and I went along with it.  He loved seeing me wear that hat.  The things we do as a mom.  We then baked our Irish Soda Bread.  When it was done we all gathered to taste it.  I loved taking time to bake with my kids during the holidays.  It is one of our family traditions and a great way to make lasting memories.

Here is the site I got the recipe from Andrea Meyers.

What we used: 4 c self rising flour, 3tsp baking powder, 1/4 c sugar, 4 TBS butter(room temp), 1 c dried cherries, 1 c raisins, 1 egg slightly beaten, & 1 3/4 c buttermilk.
What we did: mix the dry ingredients together and add butter.  After mixing in the butter add raisins and cherries. Then mix remaining ingredients together.  Pre heat oven to 375 degrees and use spray oil in 2 round cake pans.  Once mixture is mixed pour out onto a floured surface and knead for a min.  Then place in the pans.  Take 1 TBS milk and brush on the tops of the dough and add a little sugar.  then bake for 35-40 minutes or until done.

We always love trying new things during the holidays and making Irish Soda Bread was our something new for St. Patrick’s Day this year.  We really enjoyed eating our yummy treat when it was ready and give it 2 thumbs up.
